A shimmering alt-folk gem which in all its sincerity is something of a missing link between Iron & Wine, Bon Iver and Bright Eyes in their finest moments. A Choir of Ghosts is a well-directed drama characterized by dizzying heights, pitch black depths and an equally elegant as passionate interplay between falsetto and tenor.
James Auger and his brainchild A Choir of Ghosts, provide a pleasant and vital respite in a contemporary age marked by hectic job advertisements, a waste of resources and a societal tone too cold to reach its addressee. He grew up in the small fishing town of Whitby in the county of North Yorkshire in north-east England, but for a few years now has found a home among the wild forests and frozen lakes of north-western Ångermanland. Once there and hand in hand with the forest he himself has canonized, the four elements earth, air, fire and water are given room to play through existence, spiritual life and artistry. A chess board whose surface, however, is not completely free of friction, but which is also threatened by an apocalyptic vision. A nightmare ending for the land we inherited.
But hope does not fail A Choir of Ghosts. Never. In its natural kingdom there is a constant forward movement. A well-organized counterforce and with it a key to a better world in the form of an incomparable ability to see and understand other people.
