In 1966 in Jerusalem, Palestine, the siblings of the Ashrawi family formed what would eventually become Al-Bara’em (in English: The Blooms), Palestine’s first original Arabic rock n roll band. They began as a cover band -- favoring songs by The Beatles, Cliff Richard & The Shadows, The Who, The Kinks, and Jimi Hendrix -- and billed themselves as The Blooms before eventually transitioning to writing original Arabic music (and changing their name to Al-Bara’em) following the events of Black September of 1970.
Then came the 1967 War and the illegal Israeli military occupation of Jerusalem. Not long after, the events of Black September transpired, it was then that Emile and Samir felt playing dance-friendly covers wouldn’t suffice, so they began composing their own Arabic songs. As a result, Al-Bara’em became the first band to write and perform original Arabic rock n roll music in Palestine. The band was also the first to feature women quite literally front and center on stage; the Ashrawi sisters, backed by Al-Bara'em, sang rock n roll versions of songs by legendary Lebanese singer Fairuz. They quickly became a sensation, playing sold-out shows around Palestine for crowds that numbered in the hundreds.
Al-Bara’em was active until 1976.
