1998年4月8日、シングル「poker face」でデビュー。
1999年1月1日発売の1stアルバム『A Song for ××』でミリオンセールスを記録。
2001～2003年には前人未到の3年連続日本レコード大賞を受賞。
ソロアーティストとしては史上初、日本の音楽史上3組目となるシングル・アルバム総売上5,000万枚突破という大記録を樹立。

全ての作詞を自ら手掛け、その詞が描く世界観と一度聴いただけで耳に残る歌声は聴く人全てに訴えかけ、ファッションや生き方までもが世代を超えて多くの女性から支持を受けている。

2024年には、16年ぶりとなるアジアツアー中国公演のチケットが1分でソールドアウト、上海メルセデス・ベンツアリーナの海外アーティスト観客動員記録を更新するなど、アジアで絶大な人気を誇る。

2025年4月8日、ニューシングル「mimosa」（フジテレビ系月9ドラマ「続・続・最後から二番目の恋」主題歌）をリリース。
