Brussels-based band AZMARI has been active on the Belgian and international scene for almost 10 years.
With solid live experience and three albums recorded in the last five years, the project has been in constant evolution over the years. From Istanbul to Rome, Vienna to Bordeaux, Berlin to Geneva, the walls of Europe's concert halls have already shaken to the passage of the Belgian group!
A first EP, “Ekera”, was released in 2019, laying the foundations for what was to become the “azmari sound”, tinged with ethio, Turkish and psychedelic influences.
Their debut LP “Sama'î” followed in 2021, further asserting the band's desire to free themselves from any label that would curb their creativity. Including dub sounds, funk and still following their love for Ethiopian and Oriental modalities.
Their latest release, “Maelstrom”, arrived in 2023. Continuing their musical journey, this third album plunges even deeper into sonic research. Keyboard textures become more complex, saxophone roars move between syncopations and polyrhythms... Azmari's sound has definitely made its mark on the Belgian jazz scene, and promises many more surprises.
Influences range from an eclectic array of artists, including Okay Temiz, Heliocentrics, Whitefield Brothers, Surprise Chef, Antibalas and Sons of Kemet.
