BabyTron

Michigan rapper BabyTron stands out for applying his lyrical wit and clever punchlines to uncommon instrumentals. After his 2019 track "Jesus Shuttlesworth" went viral on the strength of BabyTron's comical flow over a somewhat throwback synth pop backdrop, he became known for his ability to rap over any outlandish beat, which he exhibited on releases like 2021 mixtape Bin Reaper 2 and the 2022 album Megatron. With 2022's Bin Reaper 3: Old Testament and 2023's Bin Reaper 3: New Testament, he reached the top half of the Billboard 200. He followed these with additional releases like MegaTron 2 and 2024's Mario & Luigi (with Certified Trapper).

BabyTron was born James Johnson in 2000 and grew up in Ypsilanti, Michigan. In his teens, he formed the rap group <a href="spotify:artist:0ztFqsZLzjkKU2aRyeqQ9S">ShittyBoyz</a> with friends TrDee and StanWill. <a href="spotify:artist:0ztFqsZLzjkKU2aRyeqQ9S">ShittyBoyz</a> were part of the Detroit-area scam rap scene of the late 2010s, but when BabyTron struck out on his own, his songs were more focused on speedy flows and cuttingly humorous lyrics. A few solo singles arrived in 2019, as did his Bin Reaper mixtape, which featured appearances from <a href="spotify:artist:6icQOAFXDZKsumw3YXyusw">Lil Yachty</a>, BandGang Javar, and others. Some buzz began forming around BabyTron's unique presentation and beat selection at this time, and he quickly released more music, sharing mixtapes like Sleeve Nash, Back to the Future, Luka Troncic, and Bin Reaper 2 over the next two years. In 2022, he released Megatron, an album-length project that included guest spots from GTP Daidoe, <a href="spotify:artist:1R4jDezcLcFxrJ9PHNrbG0">DaBoii</a>, and Glockboyz. Another full-length, Bin Reaper 3: Old Testament, charted at number 69 on the Billboard 200. New Testament followed in January of 2023 and charted at number 100. After being pulled over and arrested in Nebraska for possession of a controlled substance, he was released after posting a portion of his bond. He released an EP titled Out on Bond in February. The prolific rapper released two more albums, 6 (issued on June 6) and MegaTron 2, before the end of the year. In 2024, he released the mixtapes Case Dismissed and Mario & Luigi (with Certified Trapper), as well as singles like "Really Jimmy?" ~ TiVo Staff
