A daughter of full-blooded Manobos of Bunawan, Agusan del Sur, Bayang first brought her indigenous musical roots to the mainstream entertainment scene in the late 1980s as the female voice of the band Joey Ayala at ang Bagong Lumad. A cultural worker, she has leveraged her ethnic musicality as a solo artist to promote indigenous peoples’ rights, peace, respect for cultural diversity, women’s issues, environment protection, and social causes in the past two decades. She has continued to dedicate her voice, compositions, or stage performances to causes aligned to her advocacies, and she will continue to do so in other capacities given the chance while staying close to her cultural origins.
