Black Dub was formed in 2009 by producer, guitarist, and songwriter <a href="spotify:artist:5S0AJvE9NB1kGrXRfYh690">Daniel Lanois</a> with bassist <a href="spotify:artist:62Lwr2Alv5e39BT8hUdfoe">Daryl Johnson</a>, drummer <a href="spotify:artist:0nXwIc4NAbu2K881ealRDu">Brian Blade</a>, and vocalist/keyboardist <a href="spotify:artist:3MZIxeB762kFLJ8ceou6uJ">Trixie Whitley</a> (daughter of the late singer songwriter <a href="spotify:artist:48oNDvKRqviSFzow0ZXHXa">Chris Whitley</a>). The band began recording their rehearsals on audio and video while shopping for a deal, posting the videos on YouTube. The musical mixture is a heady, steamy, nocturnal brew of rock, New Orleans-inspired funk, soul, reggae, and Americana. They recorded their self-titled debut in various locations, and decided on releasing the set on <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Red+Ink%22">Red Ink</a>, which is distributed by <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Jive%22">Jive</a>. They also began playing a limited live engagements in anticipation of the forthcoming release and posting some of these performances on their website. The album's release was delayed, however, when <a href="spotify:artist:5S0AJvE9NB1kGrXRfYh690">Lanois</a> was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident in July of 2010.
