Introducing Soma, the fourth solo album by Branko, the visionary producer and co-founding member of Buraka Som Sistema, and the mastermind behind the Enchufada label.
Recorded in Lisbon over a three-day jam session, where Branko challenged some of the most critical Lisbon based musicians to improvise over a rhytmic framework. This turned into non-stop hours of recording and later served to accumulate a repository of grooves who served as the beatprint for the album. Soma amplifies authenticity and genuine expression through collaborations with local and international talents.
As a musician, DJ, label curator and promoter, few have been as pivotal as Branko (aka João Barbosa) in bringing the sound of underground Portuguese electronic music to a global audience. Since his formative years growing up in the city of Amadora on the fringes of Lisbon, Barbosa dedicated his career to elevating the unique club music hybrids–mutations of kuduro, kizomba, zouk, baile funk and more–that were spreading in the communities around him.
