b. Marc Nguyen Tan, Paris, France. Colder is the recording pseudonym of Nguyen Tan, who started his career as an art director for television in Paris boasting clients Commes Des Garcons and Kenzo among a rich list of top companies. Not content with being a graphic designer and video producer, Nguyen Tan decided in his spare time to create Colder. The result of this was the release of the 7-inch single ‘Shiny Star’ in April 2003. A paranoid dub-influenced journey through the dark side of Nguyen Tan’s brain, the single was followed in May by a 12-inch, ‘Crazy Love’. This caustic recording demonstrated the influence of UK post-punk favourites Joy Division and also gave a respectful nod to contemporaries Death In Vegas. Colder’s debut, Again, like the singles released on Trevor Jackson’s hip Output Recordings imprint, was an uplifting journey to the dark side, with rebellious undertones and sleazy energy, and a sonic palette drawn from a range of influences including dub reggae, glitch-pop and Krautrock. Nguyen Tan produced six short films to soundtrack the album, creating an audio-visual experience to complement his live shows.
