David Virelles is a Cuban pianist and composer from Santiago de Cuba who shapes inherited traditions and contemporary experimentation into a unique sonic world. Virelles has released acclaimed projects on ECM, Pi Recordings and Intakt, including Continuum (The New York Times’ #1 album of 2012), Igbó Alákọrin (The Singer’s Grove) (NPR’s Best Latin Jazz Album of 2018), and NUNA (named among the best albums of 2022 by The New York Times and NPR). Virelles has collaborated with artists such as Henry Threadgill, Andrew Cyrille, Reggie Workman, Ravi Coltrane, Bill Frisell, Mark Turner, Tom Harrell, Chris Potter, Román Díaz, Marcus Gilmore and Hermeto Pascoal. His recent Carnegie Hall commissioned work ORO reflects his commitment to creating a personal, syncretic music rooted in tradition. Virelles is a Steinway Artist and a Guggenheim Fellow.
