Spawning in the gothic harbour town of Dunedin, New Zealand, Ha the Unclear landed in the vibrant Auckland music scene following a string of lo-fi Guided by Voices-esque bedroom releases that peppered national student radio. A more focused indie pop sound and song craft emerged in studio albums Bacterium, Look at Your Motor Go and Invisible Lines.

Primary songwriter Michael Cathro's tendency to mix the surreal and the banal with incisive social quips is highlighted in songs including a love story from the perspective of a coffee table, astronauts trapped in orbit, a break-up over intercom, and a long distance relationship analogised as a faunal evolutionary boundary in Indonesia.

In 2020, the band released elevator anthem 'Strangers' which reached #1 on the New Zealand Alternative Radio Charts. on the 'Threads' EP which also included the Sylvia Massy co-production 'Julius Caesar' and time travel lament 'Supermarket Queues' which appeared on the HBO Max feature film 'There is No 'I' in Threesome'.

Newly embraced by EU audiences, singles have enjoyed rotation on the likes of Europe 2, France Inter, and FIP while 2023 saw the release of the 'Hand Print Negatives' EP. The LP 'A Kingdom in a Cul-de-sac' was released April 2024 through Paris-based imprint Think Zik !.
