Jess Locke’s trademark style is raw and honest storytelling, with a tendency for melancholy and at times poetic inclinations. Indie pop tracks that match dreamy guitar with deep emotion and self reflection, drenched in candid and vulnerable narratives.
Debuting at #7 on the Australian Independent Record (AIR) Albums Chart Don’t Ask Yourself Why, Locke’s most recent album (2021) is twelve tracks steeped in themes of human behaviour, ego and self-reflection. The songwriter from Naarm / Melbourne along with longtime band members, Chris Rawsthorne and James Morris made the record with friend and producer, Rob Muinos (Julia Jacklin, Saskwatch) in his hole-in-the-wall studio in Collingwood, before it was mastered by John Davis at Metropolis in the UK (Lana Del Ray, The Killers, Gorillaz).
Don't Ask Yourself Why followed on from 2018’s 7” My Body Is An Ecosystem / Nothing At All and Locke's acclaimed 2017 LP Universe which debuted at #18 on the AIR Independent Label Album Chart, landed Feature Album at both triple j and 2SER, was nominated for the Australian Music Prize and was #20 in Rolling Stone’s 50 Best Albums of 2017. Prior to which Locke released debut LP Words That Seem To Slip Away (2016), which landed her triple j Unearthed Feature Artist and FBi Radio’s Indie Artist of the Week.
