Coming out of the North Carolina jazz scene in the early '90s, this bassist should not be confused with an earlier John Brown born close to the turn of the 20th century and associated with trumpeter Jonah Jones. The younger Brown has accompanied artists such as trumpeter Tom Browne, another performer with strong North Carolina connections, and the excellent vocalist Nnenna Freelon. The latter artist, who has been called a young Sarah Vaughan by some enthusiastic critics, has also allowed Brown to develop his arranging skills at her recording sessions. This material can be savored either on the full length release entitled Shaking Free, or can be sampled on several Concord label compilations.
