Born in Kentucky in 1939, Joyce Harris moved with her family to New Orleans at thirteen, right into the heart of a city alive with rhythm and soul. She learned guitar, wrote songs, and began performing with her younger sister Judy. Together as Judy and Joyce, they released a handful of singles in the late ’50s before Joyce set out on her own, singing in Mexico and later recording solo hits like I Cheated and No Way Out. Her performance of “No Way Out” on American Bandstand in 1961 marked a proud moment in a career that carried her through the golden years of early rock & roll and R&B.
“I wish I’d taken more pictures back then,” Joyce says. “I was surrounded by greats — the Nevilles, Irma, Fats, Allen Toussaint, Dr. John — all of us making music around Cosimo’s studio. What a time that was.”
Now living peacefully in her cypress log home on a Louisiana lake, Joyce feels grateful. “It’s a blessing to see people still loving our music,” she says. “We were pioneers and I just wanted my songs to be part of my legacy, something my family can always look back on.”
A true daughter of New Orleans rhythm and soul, Joyce was part of the early waves of rock & roll and R&B. Now, seeing her songs find new listeners brings her joy and gratitude. “It’s a blessing,” she says. “There’s still a place for our music - the sound we helped create.”
