Leopold Ross

Leopold Ross is an English musician, producer, engineer, and composer known for his work with several rock bands, and for scoring films and television productions, sometimes in collaboration with his brother, Oscar-winning composer <a href="spotify:artist:5HARKwnZLNQBeUGsTHX2AM">Atticus Ross</a>. Leopold Ross is known for the atmospheric use of electronics in his music for 2016's Almost Holy and Triple 9, while he would later add organic elements to complement the digital surfaces in 2022's The Girl from Plainsville and 2023's Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.

Hailing from London, England, Leopold Ross' career began early at the age of 15 when he joined the rock band No Jahoda, who signed with Sony imprint <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22S2+Records%22">S2 Records</a> in the late '90s. The group put out a self-titled EP in 1998 and one album, Jahoda Witness, in 1999. Eventually Nojahoda disbanded, and Ross continued to further pursue musical outlets with a number of projects. He went on to join his brother <a href="spotify:artist:5HARKwnZLNQBeUGsTHX2AM">Atticus</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:2yJwXpWAQOOl5XFzbCxLs9">Bad Religion</a> guitarist Brett Gurewitz, and <a href="spotify:artist:7IGcjaMGAtsvKBLQX26W4i">Dillinger Escape Plan</a> vocalist <a href="spotify:artist:3seAlZdPsUKKveZltRG7wi">Greg Puciato</a> in the erstwhile electronic hardcore project <a href="spotify:artist:3HRG5OLEQQCf2IllFCnmpa">Error</a>. <a href="spotify:artist:3HRG5OLEQQCf2IllFCnmpa">Error</a> put out a self-titled EP via <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Epitaph+Records%22">Epitaph Records</a> in 2004 that received widespread critical acclaim. The project came to an end in 2006, and Leopold went on to compose one of his first scores for the U.S. crime drama Touching Evil. Ross added studio work to his resume, producing and engineering sessions for artists such as <a href="spotify:artist:6f9zLIMqyEu7abKhGMFr5q">the Transplants</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:2f9ZiYA2ic1r1voObUimdd">Grace Jones</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:2yJwXpWAQOOl5XFzbCxLs9">Bad Religion</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:3RNrq3jvMZxD9ZyoOZbQOD">Korn</a>, and <a href="spotify:artist:7IGcjaMGAtsvKBLQX26W4i">the Dillinger Escape Plan</a>. In 2009, he contributed writing and production to the score for the Hughes Brothers’ movie The Book of Eli, alongside <a href="spotify:artist:5HARKwnZLNQBeUGsTHX2AM">Atticus</a> and <a href="spotify:artist:5aLZjAYSY6UKDQCr68mKUE">Claudia Sarne</a>. Later that year, he returned to the stage as touring bass guitarist for English electronic band the <a href="spotify:artist:4xM0Rz2FbjZevoVLVJUgEQ">Big Pink</a> for an international concert tour.

In the following years, he formed the indie rock ensemble <a href="spotify:artist:3TQKbfmV71guAH49oalx69">IO Echo</a> with <a href="spotify:artist:4ctIi0Pt6FzHjDUD7CU2os">Ioanna Gika</a>. The band put out their debut single, "While You Were Sleeping," on California-based independent label <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Iamsound+Records%22">Iamsound Records</a> in 2010, and followed it up with a self-titled EP in 2012. In 2011, Ross and the band contributed a score to the short video installation piece Rebel by Harmony Korine and James Franco. <a href="spotify:artist:3TQKbfmV71guAH49oalx69">IO Echo</a> put out their first full-length, Ministry of Love, in 2013, followed by their second EP, I’ve Been Vaping Your Tears, in 2014. During his downtime from <a href="spotify:artist:3TQKbfmV71guAH49oalx69">IO Echo</a>, Ross continued to accept scoring assignments, most notably with his brother and <a href="spotify:artist:5aLZjAYSY6UKDQCr68mKUE">Claudia Sarne</a> on such films as Broken City (2013), Blackhat (2015), and Triple 9 (2016). In 2016, Ross and <a href="spotify:artist:5HARKwnZLNQBeUGsTHX2AM">Atticus</a> collaborated with U.K. electronic artist <a href="spotify:artist:0e3tj3Rn5xXhUmOjn2cv1J">Bobby Krlic</a> (also known as the <a href="spotify:artist:543jOiqi5zLNZIOv7rA6rg">Haxan Cloak</a>) on Steve Hoover's documentary film Almost Holy. Ross returned with <a href="spotify:artist:3TQKbfmV71guAH49oalx69">IO Echo</a> the same year with the single “Crossing Over,” a collaboration with L.A.-based composer and producer Lawless. The Ross Brothers and <a href="spotify:artist:5aLZjAYSY6UKDQCr68mKUE">Claudia Sarne</a> continued to stay busy, working together on music for the Ridley Scott-produced drama Earthquake Bird (2019), <a href="spotify:artist:2eaAoOUNWD4RNjmU7Slqi6">Jason Segel</a>'s television project Dispatches from Elsewhere, and the documentary series Dear Mama (2022), about the life of Tupac Shakur.
