Maridalen is a Norwegian jazz trio from Oslo. The name Maridalen comes from the scenic valley that lies just north of Oslo city center. After the trio's eponymous debut record was released on Jazzland Recordings in 2021 they followed up with their second album "Bortenfor" (2022), also recorded in the wooden Maridalen church, just a short distance from the old stone ruins of St Margaretakirken and the shores of Maridalsvannet.
In the spring in 2023 the trio set sail for the island Gressholmen in the Oslo fjord. There, in a wooden cabin owned by the Norwegian Trekking Association, they recorded their third album "Gressholmen" which will be released on Jazzland Recordings on April 5th 2024.
Strong eloquent melodies, poignant and expressive, are a key element of Maridalen's compositions, providing a strong foundation for their measured and resonant musicianship. "Gressholmen" consolidates their output to date and demonstrates that it is infinitely more than their novel approach that makes Maridalen one of the most acclaimed groups in recent years: it is their superb artistry as both composers and musicians that provides the magical ingredient that makes their music so compelling.
