Hillel Tigay was brought up on the Beatles and the great stories of life – the son of a biblical scholar who taught at UPenn. Hillel graduated with honors and a musicology degree, from Penn, where he expanded his rock instrument arsenal to a host of exotic instruments like the oud, lute , cumbus and sitar.
Hillel’s most recent solo project, Palms Station, is named for the West L.A. area, where he lives with his family. Recorded largely in his home studio, Hillel does virtually all the parts/instruments along with his two daughters on various vocals. Palms Station offered a flip side to his previous spiritual-based project, JUDEO.
Palms Station’s emotional rock chant “Alive,” evokes the spiritual qualities of Arcade Fire; it soars and inspires.
“I Don’t Know the Way to Your Heart,” with alt rocking guitars and echoed vocals, is reminiscent of the British Invasion and sparkles like a sister to “Under The Milky Way" by the Church.
His musical career found him working with A&M Records and co-founding the ‘hebe-hop’ band M.O.T. on SIRE Records recording as Dr. Dreidel. His musical evolution now has branched into 2 paths: spiritual and world music with Judeo Volumes I and II, and Alt rock/pop with Palms Station.
Tigay, for the past 15 years has been cantor and musical director at progressive L.A. synagogue, IKAR. Under the auspices of Rabbi Sharon Brous, the ultra-hip congregation includes members like Steven Spielberg & Natalie Portman.
