Piney Gir has completed her trilogy of EP's the newest one being "Cosmic Upside Down" out very soon! From her debut release in 2004 through several albums and incarnations, Piney has evolved and deepened her trademark sweetness-with-strychnine aesthetic. She has gained substantial critical acclaim and a small but devoted fanbase.
"Cosmic Upside Down" is Piney's Berlin EP... recorded in the building that used to be the German Royal Mint, during WW2 Hitler stored his art collection there… the building is covered in bullet holes and the gravity of that history is heavy in the halls there. Nowadays, the German government has sort of ‘given back’ that building to the artistic community by providing space for affordable art and music studios. There is definitely a spooky vibe on the top floor (where the Direktorenhaus Studio is!) & also down the hallways, there was just a presence, the curtain between our world and the spirit world is thin. Late at night, they would record vocal takes in the hallway because there was such a delightful natural reverb echoing in the halls. Piney explains, "I felt like I was singing for an audience of ghosts, and I think that they liked it. On my last day there, after my final vocal take, I said goodbye to those ghosts. I wonder if they think about me as often as I think of them."
When she's not recording her own music, Piney has been touring the world singing with Gaz Coombes and singing/doing vocal arrangements with Noel Gallagher.
