Psychic Bloom is the genre-blurring project of Iranian-born musician Aref Ahmadi, known as Hashill—a self-taught guitarist, songwriter, and producer whose sound blends psychedelic rock with elements of soul, R&B, ’70s electro, dream pop, psych rock, and country blues, inspired by Persian mysticism. Formed in 2015 in Tehran under intense cultural and political restrictions, the band embodies a spirit of artistic resilience and underground rebellion.
In a country where rock music is outlawed, Ahmadi began making music in secret, recording in improvised home studios with limited resources and a deep well of inspiration. Aref was eventually suspended from playing music and banned from performing, as he could not be artistically active in his homeland. Years passed as he navigated the difficulties of obtaining a U.S. visa under a travel ban that made such aspirations nearly impossible. But his dreams were too stubborn to die. Refusing to give up, he eventually left Iran and made his way to the United States.
In 2023, Ahmadi left Tehran and relocated to Los Angeles, finally able to pursue music freely and prepare for live performance. Now based in New York City, Psychic Bloom has grown into a four-piece band featuring Warren Louie (bass), Timothy Youngman (keys) and Lucy Goodman (drums), with Hashill fronting as lead vocalist, guitarist, and primary songwriter.
