Tokyo. Since her 2007 debut album ‘Onmi’ from the vaunted Japanese label MIDI, Terao has captivated audiences with her original blend of piano driven folk music and richly arranged sophisti-pop. In the 18 years since ‘Onmi’, she has released 12 solo albums, as well as two collections of folk tunes, and three albums with her band Fuyu ni Wakarete, as well as a smattering of EPs,singles, and soundtracks.
Terao also has a prolific career as an essayist and ethnographer, covering topics as diverse as Japan’s occupation of Micronesia, to the struggles of adolescence. Her love for history also crosses over into the musical realm, with her two collections of reimagined Japanese folk songs,
My Favorite Children’s Songs I, and My Favorite Children’s Songs II
Her latest original album, ‘Shoe Shine’ (2024) sees her drawing influence from her research while still maintaining a keen ability to craft perfect folk-pop tunes.
