The “Swiss-born, Gotham-bred” (SPIN) alt./indie auteur’s new album showcases his signature “vocal power” (CoS) – which earned him the nickname ‘King of Tears’ in his home country – and strips down to the emotional core of Sam’s songwriting, by turns confidently minimalist, cinematically atmospheric, and intimately evocative throughout.

The release follows the two-time SMA nominee&#39;s sophomore effort, <a href="spotify:album:4DFh6vxJtsXMcbvDvsPqOt" data-name="Never Let Me Go">Never Let Me Go</a>, a yearlong tour, a feature on <a href="spotify:album:58OTqm8cgGgHsYgnpGyF1K" data-name="And Just Like That (Soundtrack from the HBO® Max Original Series)">And Just Like That (Soundtrack from the HBO® Max Original Series)</a> and a collaboration with the <a href="spotify:artist:2Jeq5KylvG99wzqPAYNLHH" data-name="Basel Symphony Orchestra">Basel Symphony Orchestra</a>.

In early 2020, the pandemic left <a href="spotify:artist:6jD03eJOPbjHAaCCYGALLT" data-name="Sam Himself">Sam Himself</a>, aka songwriter and performer Samuel Koechlin, stranded in Europe, unable to return to New York, his chosen home of the past decade. Exile proved to be inspiring, however, and in 2021, Sam released his debut album, <a href="spotify:album:6mEPJOgONP3GRMcaKyBBoi" data-name="Power Ballads">Power Ballads</a>, a largely home-recorded yet “well-crafted set of atmospheric post-punk” (KEXP), to international acclaim.

Sam Himself’s EP <a href="spotify:album:1459DIoRwtI047iAtJlzl2" data-name="Slow Drugs">Slow Drugs</a> (2020), feat. vocalists <a href="spotify:artist:6Dfjb3S1itIcLl2toYSiRp" data-name="Denitia">Denitia</a> and <a href="spotify:artist:6sZmvh4GUCek0kNwoSv2Fa" data-name="TEEN">TEEN</a>, as well as drummer Parker Kindred (<a href="spotify:artist:3nnQpaTvKb5jCQabZefACI" data-name="Jeff Buckley">Jeff Buckley</a>; <a href="spotify:artist:2ApaG60P4r0yhBoDCGD8YG" data-name="Elliott Smith">Elliott Smith</a>), had previously earned the National Broadcasting Network&#39;s prestigious Best Talent Award.
