Berlin based Roland Meyer de Voltaire grew up in various cities including Bonn, Dublin, Moscow, and Beijing. Initially an outsider in most places, he practiced playing the guitar before school until his fingers gave in. Today, he is an obsessive creative, singer, film score producer, and songwriter for German and international artists.
Under his solo project, SCHWARZ, he merges lush soundtrack atmospheres with club aesthetics, accompanied by sensitive and self-conscious lyrics. His voice sometimes as smooth as silk, sometimes as sharp as a razor.
Equally diverse is the array of collaborators: Ranging from established artists like Schiller and former Archive member Craig Walker, to emerging talents such as this year's Swiss Music Award nominee DANA, from star DJ duo Younotus to Torsten Quaeschning, mastermind of electronic music pioneers Tangerine Dream, only to name a few.
In recent years, he gained publicity as the protagonist in the Netflix docu series "Wie ein Fremder-eine deutsche Popmusikgeschichte" where director Aljoscha Pause followed him on his musical path for six years. Recently he sang and co-composed the title track of the HBOMax series "Two Sides of the Abyss," which was released in over 50 countries. Now, his second self-produced album as SCHWARZ, „red pill“, is set to be released on September 15th. The songs shed light on how the indirect directness of social networks changes the way we interact with each other. The release is followed by a tour in winter.
