After years paying her dues as a backing singer and guest vocalist it’s finally time for Shaneeka Simon to step into the spotlight with her powerful debut single “Underground Railroad” featuring Eric Bibb. The support of two-time Grammy nominee Bibb has been instrumental for Shaneeka, who featured on his heavily radio-rotated single “Born of a Woman” from the multi-award winning 2021 album Dear America.
Shaneeka was just 5 years old when she first witnessed domestic violence. The painful memory of her father abusing her mother follows her throughout her life and has become one of many catalysts for her unique musical expression.
“The Underground Railroad is historically associated with the escape from Slavery,” explains Shaneeka. “Having experienced what it’s like to feel trapped and without the resources to forge my own clandestine road makes this song all about my continued journey and the journey of many others like me...”
Struggles with relationships, thoughts of suicide have contributed to a long journey of self discovery and has brought Shaneeka Simon to her debut album, The River of Salvation, which will be released in early 2024 and, like “Underground Railroad”, has been produced and co-written by Glen Scott. Whether it’s sharing painful stories of broken relationships or hollering songs of hope and freedom, Shaneeka has never been more prepared or ready to embrace the future.
