Springtime Carnivore

Springtime Carnivore's name may sound aggressive, but the music does not; a light but satisfying fusion of sunshine pop, psychedelia, and folk-rock filtered through the lens of indie rock, Springtime Carnivore's music is bright and intelligent without showing off too much polish. Springtime Carnivore is a one-woman project led by <a href="spotify:artist:0ZvaDtZGSrzIjEPrRbxQ5q">Greta Morgan</a>, who was born in Oak Brook, Illinois on February 12, 1988. <a href="spotify:artist:0ZvaDtZGSrzIjEPrRbxQ5q">Morgan</a> began learning piano when she was only two, and started writing "goofy little ditties" not long after. She grew up on '60s folk and '70s pop singles, all loaded into a jukebox her father kept in their basement, which clearly influenced her later work. A multi-instrumentalist who can play guitar, bass, keyboards, and drums as well as sing, <a href="spotify:artist:0ZvaDtZGSrzIjEPrRbxQ5q">Morgan</a> first made a name for herself as a member of the Chicago-based groups <a href="spotify:artist:1RCoE2Dq19lePKhPzt9vM5">the Hush Sound</a> (originally active from 2004 to 2008) and <a href="spotify:artist:7L4QbusVfrNYUiDqjWAAgD">Gold Motel</a> (2009-2011) before relocating to Los Angeles, California and launching her new project. (<a href="spotify:artist:0ZvaDtZGSrzIjEPrRbxQ5q">Morgan</a> also toured as a member of <a href="spotify:artist:3zsjvhvKAuD6GY7i1R5zER">La Sera</a>, featuring <a href="spotify:artist:43Eh8xrRgtWNSUGVAceNrb">Katy Goodman</a> of <a href="spotify:artist:0WkO9Px6qQCM7so8lYvaCv">the Vivian Girls</a>.) Coining the name after seeing a coyote while working on songs, <a href="spotify:artist:0ZvaDtZGSrzIjEPrRbxQ5q">Morgan</a> released Springtime Carnivore's debut single in August 2014, and recorded most of their eponymous debut album using a makeshift recording setup she installed in her practice space (with <a href="spotify:artist:0ZvaDtZGSrzIjEPrRbxQ5q">Morgan</a> handling all the instruments except the bass). The rest of the songs were recorded with producer <a href="spotify:artist:7fSjnDr8tBO37Xbb2UXuYr">Richard Swift</a> at his National Freedom studio in Oregon. In 2016, after releasing a covers record with <a href="spotify:artist:3zsjvhvKAuD6GY7i1R5zER">La Sera</a>'s <a href="spotify:artist:43Eh8xrRgtWNSUGVAceNrb">Katy Goodman</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:0ZvaDtZGSrzIjEPrRbxQ5q">Morgan</a> issued her sophomore outing under the Springtime Carnivore moniker, Midnight Room. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
