Sugarcane is the musical project of Robin French, melding shimmering tropical grooves with bittersweet British indie.
Robin penned his first screenplay on the back of a tourbus, while his first band Mr Hudson and the Library supported Amy Winehouse on her UK tour. An intense love affair with Brazilian music from the '60s and '70s eventually brought him back from screenwriting to the guitar, inspiring Sugarcane’s sound - perfectly poised between sun-drenched Brazilian rhythms and rainy English melancholy.
Debut album Cat’s Eyes fuses Tropicália, Gainsbourg swagger and bookish Britpop songcraft into an eccentric and dreamy eleven-song suite. The follow-up French Fiction is due in 2026, featuring regular collaborators Molly Graham (vocals), James Taylor (drums), Raphael Mann (keyboards) and Rodrigo Ritter (percussion). Both albums are produced by Raphael Mann.
Sugarcane is also known for stellar collaborations, including with French chanteuse Cléa Vincent, BAFTA-award-winning actor Antonia Thomas (Misfits, The Good Doctor), and Molly Graham (Fonda).

“A magical and sun-drenched album…disarming and melting…beautiful, melancholy and melodic” God is the The TV
