Surface of Atlantic is an indie/post-rock band from Montreal, composed of Dave Douville, François Graham, Marco Gervais, and Marc-André Landry. Formed in 2004 as a platform for musical experimentation, they released their debut album "Ephemeral as We Speak" in 2007, featuring a newly involved string quartet. Their ethereal performances, often featuring up to ten musicians alongside immersive visuals, quickly earned them a devoted following.
In 2010, their sophomore album "A Frame Per Season" seamlessly integrated orchestral elements, leading to a licensing deal in Taiwan/China via High Note Records. Their music gained recognition through its inclusion in Xavier Dolan's "J'ai tué ma Mere (I Killed My Mother)," which garnered accolades at Cannes in 2009 and was Canada's submission for the 82nd Academy Awards.
The band's third album, "Fortunate Lives," released in 2015, was accompanied by a short film/single titled “To The Lions,” shot by acclaimed cinematographer Kristof Brandl. They have also made notable contributions to various TV and movie soundtracks, including "The Rest of Us" featuring Heather Graham.
Currently, Surface of Atlantic is diligently crafting their highly anticipated fourth studio album, with mixing by Peter Katis (The National and Interpol). Their latest single "Walk Away," released on April 8th, 2024, coincides with the North American total solar eclipse and is accompanied by a visually striking music video integrating space elements.
