The Buttons formed the day after seeing The Lemonheads perform in Edinburgh. Inspired by the simplicity of Evan Dando’s live renditions of “Being Around” and “Hospital”, they returned to their hometown of Glasgow to commence writing songs. With the ethos of “keep it simple and don’t overthink it”, the band wrote and demoed around 50 songs in their flat on Norham Street, Shawlands.
After a long hiatus and with the COVID-19 pandemic restricting everyone to their homes, lead singer/songwriter, David Walsh, decided it was time to set up a new home studio and start work on an album. Picking 12 tracks out of the 50 old demos, he and his wife, Steph, re-recorded and brought new life to the songs that would form the debut album. Named after the street where the band used to live, where the songs were written, and where it all began, “Norham Street” was released in 2022.
Since then, The Buttons’ sound has evolved. Although, still staying close to their three chord pop roots, they have incorporated shoegaze and psychedelic rock into their repertoire of songs. This is evident in their 2024 follow up album “Technicolor” and even more so, in their 3rd and most recent album, “Neon Mind”.
“Neon Mind” was released in June 2025 and is the band’s most experimental yet. With a blend of 90’s shoegaze and 60’s jangle pop, “Neon Mind” will make you feel nostalgic for a time you may not have even lived.
