Virtuoso, composer, leader. A pioneer of free jazz in Europe. The Individual Being. Tomasz Stańko was born on July 11, 1942 in Rzeszów.
He began his musical education by learning to play the piano and violin in primary school and ended with a diploma from the State Higher School of Music in Krakow, Poland, in the trumpet class.
In 1962 along with pianist Adam Makowicz, bassist Jacek Ostaszewski and drummer Wiktor Perelmuter they founded the Jazz Darings band.
In 1963 he made his debut in the band of Krzysztof Komeda. With Komeda Stańko had played for four years. He had taken a part in making the masterpiece of European jazz: the "Astigmatic" album.
In 1967 he started his own band: at first it was the Quartet but ultimately became the Quintet featuring Janusz Muniak on tenor saxophone, Zbigniew Seifert on alto saxophone and violin, Bronisław Suchanek on double bass and Janusz Stefański on drums.
In 1976 he began his adventure with the Manfred Eichers' ECM Records. The album "Balladyna" produced by the German producer became sensation on both sides of the Atlantic. In the 1980s he was a memeber of Cecil Taylor's orchestras. In Poland he had led the acoustic Quartet and the bands of C.O.C.X. and Freelectronic, introducing elements of reggae, Latin music, pop, rock, electronica and even rap into his music. In the 1990s the Artist resumed contract with the ECM Records which let him to achieve a global Jazz stardom.
He died on July 29, 2018 in Warsaw at the age of 76.
