Since forming in 2001 at Berklee College of Music, Westbound Train has shared their love of soulful ska and reggae with audiences around the world. Influenced by pioneers from The Skatalites and Hepcat to Otis Redding and The Slackers, the band built its reputation on infectious vocal hooks, soaring horn lines, and high-energy performances that have taken them everywhere from the Vans Warped Tour and Summer of Ska to Rude Cat Festival and countless international reggae gatherings.
Now entering their third decade together, Westbound Train returns with their most dynamic and resonant album to date. Produced by frontman Obi Fernandez (vocals, trombone) and drummer Eric Novod, and mixed and mastered by Tim Panella, the record was captured at The Relic Room in New York City. It marries warm analog textures with inventive arrangements, adding fresh perspective to a sound the band has spent years perfecting.
Modern bands are many things, and Westbound Train is no exception. Its members are fathers and sons, teachers and business owners, studio musicians and bandleaders. They are also dedicated to carrying forward their unique recorded take on classic Jamaican music. Today’s lineup features Fernandez alongside Rich Graiko (trumpet), Carlos Menezes Jr. (saxophone), Gideon Blumenthal (keyboards), Alex Brumel (guitar), Alex Stern (guitar), Thad Merritt (bass), and Eric Novod (drums).
