Zay Hilfigerrr, born Tyjuan Peoples, started his music career on social media platforms, creating videos of raps, dances, and comedic skits. His stage name is a tribute to Tommy Hilfiger, while “Zay” is a self-given nickname.
Hilfigerrr was approached by Timothy McCall, a local film producer, whose son James McCall is also a rapper. McCall, who adopted the alias Zayion, collaborated with Hilfigerrr to produce the song “Juju on That Beat.” The song’s backing track was inspired by Crime Mob’s “Knuck If You Buck.”
“Juju on That Beat” gained popularity after members of the dancing group Fresh the Clowns started uploading videos of themselves dancing to it on social media. Atlantic Records recognized the song’s potential and officially distributed it in 2016. It eventually achieved a remarkable feat, reaching the #5 position on the Billboard Hot 100.
By February 2017, the song had amassed an astonishing 150 million streams on YouTube, all while Hilfigerrr was just 16 years old. The song’s success was further recognized by a Kids’ Choice Award nomination for Favorite Music Video.
Interestingly, the initial version of the song released by Hilfigerrr and McCall had a relatively short duration of 2:02, making it one of the shortest songs to reach the Billboard Hot 100 in the past four decades. However, Atlantic Records later reissued the song, extending its length to 2:23.
