London-based French composer Angèle David-Guillou makes audacious music that explores the interaction between rhythm and melody, structure and emotion, permanence and change. Writing for the piano, string and saxophone ensembles, voices and most recently the pipe organ, David-Guillou is particularly interested in how melodies create, rather than them emanate from, rhythm and structure. Influenced by Baroque music, Central European harmonies, ambient music and Minimalism, she weaves hypnotic compositions whose mutable internal architecture and shifting melodic accentuations immediately draw the listener in. David-Guillou has a passion for sound and produces all her musical outputs.
In October 2017, she released ‘En Mouvement’, her second album under her given name, on Village Green Recordings. It was followed in February 2018 by ‘Mouvements Organiques’, in which she reworked some compositions for the pipe organ.
David-Guillou is classical trained and became obsessed with the work of German composer Carl Orff at a young age and later, influenced by the experimentation of Sonic Youth, taught herself electric guitar. From 2002 she began a long-standing collaborating with the avant-rock group Piano Magic, singing and co-writing a good deal of the band’s material, while touring all over the world. She has released two song-based albums under the Klima moniker, 'Klima' published on West London’s Peacefrog imprint in 2007 and 'Serenades & Serinettes' on Second language in 2010.
