Autotelic is a Filipino pop rock quintet founded in 2012. Pooling together like-minded musicians from the ashes of disparate bands—The Naked Lights, Maya’s Anklet, Peryodiko, Lip Service, Nouveau—Josh Villena (vocals, guitar), Neil Tin (guitar), Timothy “Pabs” Vargas (bass), EJ Edralin (synth), and Gep Macadaeg (drummer), went on from being club-circuit sideliners to heralded headliners during their storied (and still ongoing) tenure. They play a heady mix of danceable guitar pop and future-forward indie rock, their narratives veering from typical lovelorn fare but nevertheless remaining accessible and magnetic. For these things Autotelic have become one of the most decorated outfits in the Age of Social and Streaming, replete with citations from mainstream channels (Awit, Myx, Jam 88.3), independent critics (Vandals on the Wall), and even brands (Jack Daniel’s) in their formidable CV.
