Tim Smith formed the band Cardiacs, with his brother, Jim, as a teenager in the late 1970s, and over the next thirty years they would become one of the most distinctive and adored cult groups in the UK. Their success established Smith as a supremely gifted songwriter and a highly innovative arranger and producer. His musical vision has inspired artistes as diverse as Radiohead, Blur, Napalm Death, Faith No More and Biffy Clyro, and through such groups his influence has been felt even more widely.
Smith’s singular musical approach combines the ambitious zeal of progressive rock with the distinctive colours of psychedelia and the almost naive charm of traditional music. In an era when American influence on pop has been omnipresent, Smith’s commitment to a uniquely British vision has been unwavering. Cardiacs albums such as “On Land And In The Sea” (1989), “A Little Man And A House And The Whole World Window” (1988) and “Sing To God” (1996) showcase his phenomenal creative power. They have also inspired a devotion in fans that remains unwavering to this day.
In July, 2020, Smith passed away. The hope is that one day his final album will be completed but, even as it stands, Tim Smith has already delivered to us a profoundly impressive musical legacy.
