Dark psychedelic soundscapes, soaring guitar riffs, and moody vocals, the east London band’s music is every angsty teen and adult’s dream. Channelling nostalgia for the 2000s pop-punk and alt-rock reign, their song ‘ME ME ME’ perfectly captures the self-pitying, wallowing feeling we’ve all come to know stuck in lockdown, bound to our beds. – Melissa Kasule for Gal-Dem’s 21 artists for 2021.

Dystopia are an all women of colour band from East London. Having met at a catholic girls school, they formed in 2014. The band consists of Amna-Janine Beau-Elsayed (Lead vocals and Guitar), Ify Ekemezie (Bass and Vocals) and Abby Mulenga (Drums, Guitar and Vocals).

Feeling voiceless and underrepresented on the platforms they look up to, particularly as women of colour in rock/alternative music, Dystopia decided to reclaim these genres for themselves by becoming the artists they didn’t have growing up. “After all, rock music is black music” - Rhonda Davis of the Sista Grrrl movement.
