J Dilla - born James DeWitt Yancey (1974-2006) was a groundbreaking Detroit producer, rapper and DJ whose innovative use of rhythm and melody in sampling reshaped modern music.
His signature style, now colloquially referred to as “Dilla Time,” as discussed in the New York Times bestselling book of the same name, evolved in solo albums, collaborations with Slum Village, Common, D’Angelo, Erykah Badu, A Tribe Called Quest, Madlib and many more. Pay Jay Productions, Inc. was founded in 2001 by J Dilla to own and manage his intellectual property including uses of his name, image, likeness, life story, brand, and music rights, and continues to do these things as part of his Estate.
