Jeangu Macrooy

The seeds for the musical journey of Jeangu Macrooy were planted when he received a guitar from his parents at age thirteen. His ambitions lead to his move from Suriname to the Netherlands in 2014. There, a collaboration with producer Perquisite took off, who signed him to Unexpected Records. Jeangu’s debut EP Brave Enough was released in 2016 and from that moment on, his career found itself on the fast track. He was named 3FM Talent, performed at Eurosonic and was nominated for an Edison Pop Award. Jeangu’s soulful debut album High On You (2017) brought him to major live slots at Lowlands and North Sea Jazz and Jeangu further diversified his sound on his second album Horizon (2019).

In early 2020, it was announced that Jeangu had been selected to represent the Netherlands at the Eurovision Song Contest with his song Grow. Eurovision was postponed, but Grow received widespread critical acclaim. Jeangu’s new submission for Eurovision, Birth Of A New Age, was released in March 2021 and was picked up by the NY Times.

On his third studio album Summer Moon (2022) Jeangu partly returned to the soulful sound of his debut album, while also drawing on electronic influences. In 2024, Jeangu portrayed the role of Jesus in the rock musical Jesus Christ Superstar, which received rave 5-star reviews in all national newspapers. Jeangu’s fourth album 'Young, Awkward & Lonely', produced by Jasper Zuidervaart, is scheduled for release in the fall of 2025.
