In 1952, he won second prize in the Concours Reine Elisabeth (Queen Elisabeth Competition) in Brussels. This marked the beginning of his successful international concert career in Europe.

Engle is particularly interested in elucidating of the fundamental aspects of the compositions he performs, idenitifying, and mastering, technical obstacles merely as a starting point.
