Emotive, textured, and quietly surreal, Koloto’s music unfolds like a series of scenes — sound that lives somewhere between music and story.
Koloto is the electronic music project of UK-based producer and composer, Maria Sullivan, creating narrative-led work shaped by imagined worlds rather than traditional song forms. Active since 2013, the music is driven by atmosphere, pacing and emotional arc, often feeling closer to storytelling than composition.
Though influenced by classical and instrumental forms, the computer became Koloto’s primary tool through studying music technology and later teaching it. Working alone allows ideas to develop freely, turning abstract narratives, textures and emotions into fully realised pieces. There is a focus on the editing process, where small, detailed decisions quietly shape a piece’s direction and meaning.
Koloto previously played bass in Brighton math-rock band Delta Sleep and has experience with guitar, piano, and drums, though the computer offers the clearest and most flexible creative voice.
Koloto’s music has been used in Apple Arcade campaigns, featured in Ubisoft’s Riders Republic, and includes the full score for the feature film Damsel. The work has received international acclaim, with support from BBC, France Inter, Dummy, XLR8R and Dots and Dashes.
At its core, Koloto builds immersive emotional spaces — music that is playful, intimate, and carefully made, leaving room for listeners to find their own stories within it.
