The Shanghai Restoration Project

<a href="spotify:artist:0EP5EpsiMP8oLYy7sPHwf9" data-name="The Shanghai Restoration Project">The Shanghai Restoration Project</a> (SRP) is the Barcelona based electronic duo of Dave Liang and Sun Yunfan. Initially inspired by the 1930s Shanghai jazz scene, SRP’s genre-bending, border-traversing, retro-futuristic soundscape often uses poetic melodies to draw audiences into imaginary settings where unexpected adventures unfold with a dissonant and polyrhythmic palette.

SRP started out as a solo project of Dave Liang and the band&#39;s early works such as <a href="spotify:album:6544qPwInQIJUcp4FBnO5h" data-name="Instrumentals: Day - Night">Instrumentals: Day - Night</a> and <a href="spotify:album:4jXMVuuaxPrdNqFn1hbmVC" data-name="Zodiac">Zodiac</a> stood out for their organic synthesis of Chinese instrumentation, hip-hop, and electronica.

In 2011 Liang met multidisciplinary artist Sun Yunfan and the two soon started collaborating - first on music videos and live visuals and later on songwriting and production, beginning with 2015’s playful fusion album <a href="spotify:album:05iPigMUU9zOqOvPhf3G0R" data-name="Life Elsewhere">Life Elsewhere</a> featuring longtime collaborator vocalist <a href="spotify:artist:0OjNOM80cyADVtqhZqGqSO" data-name="Zhang Le">Zhang Le</a>.

Starting in 2017, the duo&#39;s releases <a href="spotify:album:6SHOyJynLQBAHbzpa68BVt" data-name="Flashbacks in a Crystal Ball">Flashbacks in a Crystal Ball</a> , <a href="spotify:album:3MpdMP50SB5CnWz9hdpV0j" data-name="R.U.R.">R.U.R.</a> and singles <a href="spotify:album:7waaybRk2TTUXvhoyroyB3" data-name="Dubalonia Radio International">Dubalonia Radio International</a> and <a href="spotify:album:1aZDkkjvB4Vd9O6BSffqtv" data-name="A148">A148</a> marked a shift toward introspection: how to dream a different future and find balance in a changing world. <a href="spotify:album:03AC1P9WIXTocMcFVvvMbH" data-name="Brave New World Symphony">Brave New World Symphony</a>, the group&#39;s 2020 release, was crafted entirely under quarantine during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The group&#39;s 2024 release <a href="spotify:album:7pJUVFoyVwqL7UvBYLkPZX" data-name="Sketchbook 94">Sketchbook 94</a> won Best Electronic Album award at China&#39;s Wave Music Awards. The songs <a href="spotify:track:2HtUTOIGspuVvvejC6iF95" data-name="The Artist">The Artist</a> and <a href="spotify:track:1BB9YQcEdaXIKJOn49t9sg" data-name="The Visionary">The Visionary</a> were featured in Liu Jian&#39;s film Art School 1994, which premiered at Berlinale in 2023.
