Laurence Equilbey, conductor and musical director of Insula Orchestra and accentus choir, combines artistic excellence with innovation. She founded accentus in the 1990s and Insula orchestra in 2012.
Equilbey renews the performance experience with staged productions at La Seine Musicale, collaborating with artists like filmmakers Pascale Ferrand and David Bobée, and choreographers Marie-Agnès Gillot, Philippe Decouflé, and Yoann Bourgeois. In 2024, she created Beethoven Wars with Antonin Baudry, an immersive show blending manga and new technologies. In 2025, she will present Schumann's Paradise and the Peri, staged by Daniela Kerck and video artist Astrid Steiner.
In opera, she will conduct Cherubini’s “Medea” at the Opéra Comique in Paris, staged by Marie-Eve Signeyrole, and The Paradise and the Peri at La Seine Musicale, staged by Daniela Kerck, both in 2025.
Equilbey is in residence at La Seine Musicale with Insula orchestra, an associate artist at the Grand Théâtre d’Aix-en-Provence, and maintains a relationship with the Philharmonie de Paris. She tours globally, conducting Insula orchestra or as a guest conductor with orchestras like the Philharmonia Orchestra, Concerto Köln, Camerata Salzbourg, and Akadamie für Alte Musik Berlin.
Equilbey champions overlooked women composers. Following a complete recording of Louise Farrenc’s symphonies, several albums are set for release in 2025, including one dedicated to Emilie Mayer (Warner Classics – Erato).
