Since their founding in 2003, Marconi Union have carved out a unique space in electronic music. The group was formed by Richard Talbot and Jamie Crossley, later joined full-time by keyboardist Duncan Meadows in 2010. Talbot and Crossley met whilst working in a record shop and began collaborating by layering electronic textures with melodic fragments, establishing the foundation for their immersive, slow-evolving sound. Their debut album Under Wires and Searchlights (2003) introduced a soothing blend of ambient electronica, jazz and dub, followed by albums Distance (2005) and A Lost Connection (2008).
The group gained worldwide attention with Weightless (2011), a composition developed in consultation with the British Academy of Sound Therapy. The track was dubbed “the world’s most relaxing song” after studies suggested it reduced anxiety and physiological stress, earning recognition from TIME magazine as an “Invention of the Year.” Despite its popularity, Marconi Union have consistently pushed beyond Weightless, releasing acclaimed albums including Different Colours (2012), Ghost Stations (2016), Dead Air (2019) and Signals (2021).
In 2023, Talbot left the group, returning Marconi Union to a duo. Crossley and Meadows re-emerged in 2025 with The Fear of Never Landing, a 55-minute continuous work divided into movements. With this album, they carried forward their pursuit of expanding their sound, embracing complexity while preserving the signature stillness at its core.
