With their blend of classic pop and sugary, Midwestern-sounding indie rock, Mazes met up in Manchester in 2009. Guitarist Jarin Tabata had moved over from the States, drummer Neil Robinson hailed from New Zealand, and guitarist Conan Roberts (head of D.I.Y. label Italian Beach Babes Records) and vocalist/guitarist Jack Cooper (head of the similar D.I.Y. label Suffering Jukebox Records) were both born and raised in the U.K. The four moved to London after starting Mazes, and released several 7" records and homemade cassettes before recording their debut full-length, A Thousand Heys, on Fat Cat Records in 2011. Their next album for Fat Cat was an exciting departure that found Mazes maturing into a unique band, with hints of Krautrock injected into their peculiar style of guitar pop for 2013's Ores & Minerals. Where that album was produced by the band and pieced together out of various performances, their next was recorded live with few overdubs in upstate New York during the blizzards of 2014 with the Parquet Courts' producer Jonathan Schenke. Wooden Aquarium was released in early autumn 2014, and showed the band delivering on the promise of their first two albums. ~ Jason Lymangrover, Rovi
