Qasim connected with melody, sound and lyricism before just about anything else. A self-confessed music head, Qasim found a certain, rare notoriety singing Islamic passages at the mosque, instead of reading them. So powerful was his affiliation to music, he would be asked to sing at eid dinners and weddings. Growing up on the north side of Chicago, his keen appreciation for the greats swelled; he wilfully devoured his father’s entire vinyl collection. At home, he would playfully create with his two brothers, recording on cassettes using household objects to create the vibrations. Anything to harmonise with; anything to feel some organic rhythm.

His own coming to age was soulful, intertwined with heartbreak and exploration. He ultimately took these experiences and poured them into his new musical collective that he formed with his brother Sultan. Though the two brothers ultimately parted ways musically to pursue differing passions, Qasim had found his niche. He re-emerged from the collaboration with live performances under his belt, a more profound understanding of the kind of sounds he wanted to create, and a deeper commitment to his journey as a solo artist.

This is the rich contextual history that made Qasim; ‘I want people to feel me through my music’ he says. Ultimately, Qasim remains intertwined and inspired by the culture from which he is birthed. A multi-faceted talent, with an ability to fuse multiple genres, Qasim shows no sign of slowing down.
