Rachel's was an American chamber music collective of long-time friends from Louisville, Kentucky that released six albums on Chicago’s Quarterstick Records between 1995 and 2003. In 1997 they recorded a Peel Session and later released two tour EPs. Their recordings have been used in numerous films, TV shows, dance, and theater productions. The group was known for its genre-defying blend of rock and classical instruments and its design aesthetic of elaborate artwork and hand-printed packaging. They recorded with a wide range of collaborators: indie-rock comrades, Juilliard students, and members of the Louisville Orchestra. Rachel’s began in Baltimore, when violist Christian Frederickson and guitarist Jason Noble began arranging music derived from Jason’s keyboard compositions. In 1991 they made a recording with cellist Eve Miller, called Rachel's Halo, which they gave to friends for the holidays. One of those friends was pianist Rachel Grimes, who soon became involved in the project. Subsequent albums were recorded by Bob Weston and mixed with the main composers of the band: Jason, Christian, and Rachel. Rachel’s toured widely from 1995-2006, adding Edward Grimes (Rachel’s brother) on drums, and Greg King who projected films to accompany performances. Tragically, untimely death claimed two members of the band: Jason Noble died in 2012 and Edward Grimes in 2017. The surviving members of Rachel’s continue to work in music, theater, education, dance, visual art and film.
