Rebekka Karijord

Artist and composer Rebekka Karijord has always tackled big themes and even bigger emotions throughout her decades-long career. Known for her experimental blend of pop, folk, and classical music, Karijord has carved a unique space in the music world with her emotive voice, intricate compositions, and bold exploration of diverse genres. From her many sweeping film scores to collaborative releases such as "Archives of Longing" with Attacca Quartet´s Andrew Yee, as well as Jessica Dessner and The National´s Bryce and Aaron Dessner in the group Complete Mountain Almanac, Rebekka´s ability to merge the experimental with the accessible continues to set her apart as a unique and powerful voice in contemporary music.

Her latest work, The Bell Tower—her seventh studio album, released April 25th on Bella Union—is no different. A moving, in-depth meditation on our modern age, the album uses only the human voice as instrumentation and marries Rebekka’s innate aptitude for experimentation with the power of her narrative songwriting style. Recorded with the American vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth, Rebekka composed The Bell Tower entirely using a self-built digital instrument comprising hundreds of voice samples from 25 male, female, and non-binary singers. The result is a strikingly familiar yet otherworldly sound—the album’s 11 tracks push the natural limits of the human voice, opening up a world halfway between the synthetic and the organic.
