Rui Massena, a Porto-based musician and composer, has been playing the piano since the age of five and has been a conductor since he was 27. When he released his second album of originals "Ensemble", he immediately reached number 1 on national sales charts in Portugal.
With a solo career of only five years, three original albums, an EP coming out in February, he is now heard in 91 countries and has been chosen by the publisher Deutsche Grammophon, as a contemporary global talent. Massena has been selected to become a part of DG music compilation "Expo1" including 29 compositions by authors like, Jóhann Jóhannsson, Max Richter, John Cage, Philip Glass, Ólafur Arnalds . 'EXPO 1' presents the most popular music from today’s leading ‘neo-classical’ composers, that is, the most influential voices in the current wave of post-minimalist composition where contemporary classical and alternative popular musical styles collide.
His songs convey tranquility punctuated with moments of great emotion.
