The Grimes Vol. 1 is a cinema-inspired exploration of sound and emotion, representing a shift in the musical landscape in Cambodia. Songha, director of A&R at Baramey, has taken full control in the producer’s seat and, inspired by Hollywood blockbuster movies, assembled a cast of 19 Khmer talents - ranging from up-and-coming rappers to established superstars - to execute his vision with every single song representing a different film he was inspired by. Originating from a covid lockdown which forced him to watch lots of film, he has left behind his pop rock roots and ventured into cinematic drill, hip hop, experimental, and more. The Grimes himself is an alter-ego signified by his golden welding mask representing the craftsmanship behind music with every little detail mattering to the final composition. This is just a starting point for the rising Songha who has grown to prominence as the engineer and collaborator behind Cambodian rap phenomenon, VannDa, having worked on every song VannDa has released since their first collaboration in 2018. Like a marathon of films lined up for cinephiles and audiophiles alike, take a journey into the world of Songha’s The Grimes Vol. 1.
