This melodic UK hard rock band was formed in 1981 by ex-Wild Horses trio Reuben Archer (vocals), Laurence Archer (guitar) and Frank Noon (drums). Recruiting bass player Colin Bond, they signed to Polydor Records the following year. Noon left for Tormé and was replaced by Eddie Parsons before they debuted with The Official Bootleg, recorded live at the Reading Festival. Their music at this point incorporated elements of Deep Purple and UFO, particularly the guitar style of Laurence Archer which appeared to be a composite of the techniques of Michael Schenker and Ritchie Blackmore. Hurricane Town followed, but was a disappointment. It featured disposable, mid-paced rockers reminiscent of Thin Lizzy. Unable to attract media attention, Stampede split up in 1983. Laurence Archer joined Grand Slam and later recorded a solo album, L.A.
