Equal parts sweetness and ferocity, Sunscreen are an indie rock band from Sydney. A songwriting partnership between Sarah Sykes and guitarist Alexander McDonald, and accompanied by a live band of friends, Sunscreen have become a beloved fixture of the Australian music community to their distinctly ethereal sound and magnetic live performances. Ahead of their 2016 early demo ‘Now I’ve Got Your Heart’, Sunscreen broke through with the captivating 2017 single ‘Voices’, which won the hearts of community radio stations nationwide. Sunscreen’s first two EPs, 2017’s ‘Just A Drop’, and 2019’s ‘Falling In An Elevator’, were released on the late Spunk Records, an iconic tastemaker label in Australian indie music. Fast forward a few hazy pandemic years, Sunscreen return with a shimmering new material that captures their signature dreamy, guitar-laden energy and sends it into hyperdrive; a glimpse into the kaleidoscopic lens through which Sarah and Alex see the world. After the release of frenetic ‘Drain’ in late 2023, their new single ‘Kick’ is a candy-coated dream-pop number that takes you on a trip to a place warm and fuzzy. ‘Kick is a song about missing your best friend’, says vocalist Sarah Sykes. ’The person that when you’re around them, you see the world through rose-coloured glasses – it’s a song about longing for their company.’ Kick is the band’s second single release ahead of a larger body of work due for release in mid 2024.
