Raw folk from the Medway Delta.
The Loins started back in ‘91 as a trash-folk duo, Brod & Arfur bashing out lo-fi gems onto Billy Childish’s reel-to-reel. 12 years and 5 or 6 albums later, they added banjo / mandolin / accordion, hooked up with Damaged Goods Records and released another 4 or 5 records (depends who’s counting) – big in Medway and Serbia, but pretty much unknown everywhere else, they called it a day in 2013. 10 years later, after the death of Chris Broderick, they reformed, added fiddle, drums, electric & bass and, in 2024, released ‘Twelve’ on Damaged Goods – a sort of ‘best of’ of the lo-fi years, re-modelled & re-purposed for the new line-up. As well as gigging regularly as The Loins, they also moonlight with Billy as The North Kent Folkways Revival (there’s been another 3 albums and a 6 Music Riley & Coe session recorded in May 2025).
The latest Loins mini LP, Camber ‘87, is a further progression – the lead track, Teeth & Eyes, is a new song, a pox-marked beauty – the other 5 are revised versions of lo-fi oldies, twisted & adapted to the new sound.
The Loins are:
Chris 'Arfur' Allen - Lead vocals & 12 string,
Rob Shepherd - banjo, mandolin & accordion,
Oli Allen - electric guitar,
Richard Moore - violin,
Brenden Esmonde - bass,
Chris Grenfell - drums
